Five Tips for a First-Time Solo Traveler

Solo travel has become more popular in recent years as a form of self-discovery and empowerment. I’ve encountered people who always wanted to take that trip or vacation but never got a chance, either waiting for their partner, friends, or family to be available. That’s why I admire solo travel. The freeing and satisfying feeling of taking that leap for yourself without having to wait for anybody. Anyway, if you’re here, you’ve finally decided to take that bold step. While it seems fun, taking a solo trip for the first time can be scary. Here are some tips to help you during your first trip:

1. Research on Where You Want to Go

I cannot understate the importance of knowing about your travel destination and familiarizing yourself beforehand. As unfortunate as it is, not all that glitters is gold. A destination might seem intriguing, but in reality, the negatives outweigh the positives. Learn about the culture of your desired destination, how they perceive tourists, and the general safety of the locality. As a first-time solo traveler, having a negative experience can discourage you from taking another trip. You can also consult professionals to advise you on the most suitable travel destinations for a solo traveler.

2. Target Locations that Speak Your Language

I understand the desire and fascination to explore new things and new cultures. However, it’s important to remember that this is your first time traveling alone. This step is bold and possibly challenging enough. For your first trip, look for a destination with a familiar culture and one that speaks your language. It helps you feel more comfortable, interact easily with people, and boosts your confidence to travel alone in the future. The experience will help you gradually transition into undertaking more solo travel challenges in the future.

3. Always Carry Some Cash

It’s easy to forget the importance of having some cash in hand because technology has made everything accessible. Travel to a new country? You can always withdraw some money at the ATM. However, I cannot emphasize how crucial it is to have some cash in person, plus the transaction fees for foreign transactions are high. A friend traveled to a new country, and her account was flagged when they tried to make a payment. And why not? The withdrawal seemed suspicious because it was in unfamiliar territory. She had to call her bank and wait for 48 hours for her transaction to go through. Imagine experiencing this in a new location. My friend was lucky enough because her sister bailed her out, but you might have no options in that situation. With some cash, you can easily move around and avoid these inconveniences. Also, find a currency exchange bureau to convert your funds into the local currency. It’ll be easier, I promise. (Your bank can flag your card; international transactions are also expensive).

4. Budget Carefully

Before you go on your trip, it’s important to understand how much you will spend and allocate your funds effectively. Budget for travel, accommodation, activities, meals, and movement. This prevents overspending and any financial strains during your travel. Imagine spending all your money on the first day of a five-day adventure. Inconveniencing, isn’t it? You’d have to stay in your hotel or resort and have no freedom to explore the new location. The alternative is to ask a friend or family to wire you some funds, and I’m sure this is not as fun as it sounds. Also, remember to leave out some funds for miscellaneous spending. You will always come across things you never intended to buy.

5. Join Solo Travel Groups

Joining a solo travel group might sound like beating the logic of “solo” travel, but this is not always the case. You can always find groups of people who travel alone and join them. After all, a little company isn’t bad. For a first-time traveler, this will ease you into taking more trips without waiting for people around you to make it happen. It also gives you solace to know that many other people take trips alone. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to connect with new people who share your interests. Some platforms to find fellow solo travelers include Couchsurfing, Backpackr, and Workaway. Remember always to be cautious when meeting strangers and avoid being in private spaces with them.

Don’t forget to journal, take pictures, and record videos to capture your amazing adventure.
